Core
Stability (Posture)
This is a column on Core
stability which is a buzz subject as it deals with Pilates.
Core stability is about
posture, the way you hold yourself and move using the right muscles and
not the muscles that have taken over because the right muscles are too
weak therefore bad posture.
It is best explained
like this:
Your body has 2 types
of muscles, Mobility muscles (muscles that help you move) and stability
muscles (muscles that keep you upright and in good posture).
Mobility muscles are
superficial (muscles you can see like biceps, chest and thigh muscles).
When you need to move they switch on and when you don't need them they
switch off. When you use them you use about 70% of their maximum output
therefore they don't last a long time, then they fatigue.
Stability muscles are
deep muscles like your transverse abdominus (belly) or your multifidus
muscles (spine). When you wake up in the morning you should switch these
muscles on and keep them on all the way through the day until you go to
bed. They should never switch off. Because of this these muscles use 30%
of its maximum output therefore they are very good for stamina so you can
use them all day. All you have to do is to remember to check if your
posture is correct.
