Motivation
The
biggest problem I find when trying to train someone to get fit is
motivation. Your mind rules your body and it will do anything your mind
tells it to do. If your body is unable to do what you mind wants e.g.
cycle for 40 min, your body will even change, get fitter, and adapt to the
demands that your mind requires. The problem lies when your mind does not
want to go through the rigmarole's of training, this is called lack of
motivation.
In
your life people do things if they have a reason to do e.g. I will work
these hours at work for this money so I can buy this house and have
security. If you don't have a reason for doing something what's the point
of doing it? The initial reason most people train is to lose fat and
inches, WHY? The majority because they want to feel good about themselves
(their body anyway) After 3 months this reason is not motivating enough.
It's not a good enough reason to put you through the demands on the body.
Security
in life is one of the main demands we set in our lives. We have to be
secure. To be secure, it would help if we could plan the outcome of an
event before we went into it. If we cannot see a clear outcome of an even,
we have to presume. BIG MISTAKE. We always presume the worst because
better to be safe then sorry. Humans have got into the habit of playing
safe. Not doing things just in case it doesn't work. A presumption is
working out, guessing in fact about something that hasn't happened yet.
Looking into the future for security. If you can't see it, you'd rather
not do it unless you have a legitimate reason. GIVE EVERY CHANCE OR
OPPORTUNITY THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT UNTIL PROVEN OTHERWISE OR ONE DAY
YOU'LL BE SAYING TO YOURSELF "WELL, I COULD HAVE".
When
people get set to train, they look at the end of "I'm going to be
able to do this". After 3 Months, people start to presume like they
do a lot of things in life. If people have the facts in front of them
" If you do this you will look like that because... "
(education) they don't have to presume because they know what to do. Then
they accept the fact yes I can do this. The next step is doing it. Because
of habit, you look at the bike and presume " I can't do 40 mins on
that!" Instead of "well let's just see". If you live for
the now, keep your mind in the present and give yourself the benefit of
the doubt (you don't have to look to the future to see whether you'll pass
or fail (because you know that if you do, and you cant work it out, you
know you will not do it).
Take
your mind off whether you'll do it and keep your mind on why you're doing
it. You might be doing it to lose inches and fat, but you have to ask
yourself for what? The answer to those questions will be the reason why
you'll do it. These are called GOALS. The LONG TERM goal is I want to lose
fat and inches. This is not a good enough reason for you to keep on
training Motivation on average lasts about 3 months after that the reason
is old hat because we all (well nearly all of us) progress and evolve. You
have to give yourself reasons to lose fat and inches every three months.
These are called SHORT TERM GOALS e.g., I want to get fitter... ...To help
lower my golf handicap in three months
...For
my holiday in three months.
...For
my wedding in three months.
...For
my husband coming home from sea in one month.
Always
keep in mind your long-term goal. If you just cant, think of anything that
you want to look good for within the next three months YOUR JUST NOT
LOOKING HARD ENOUGH. Or, you can bloody well make sure that you are doing
something in your life and do it for that. Go on enjoy yourself. If you
use this awareness, all of the excuses you put onto the fitness
presumption like "I can't train because I'm too busy", "I
can't afford it", "I'll do it next week" and many more, you
will make compromises to fit it in.
You
wonder why Nike uses the term JUST DO IT. Go on take that chance you never
know where it will lead you. Here is a list of reasons to train. You could
train for a fun run and raise money for who ever. Adventure holidays are
becoming very popular at the moment. Charities are using them to raise
money like Henshaw's society for the blind. They organise challenge events
all over the world to places where you wouldn't normally travel to like
Borneo or Peru as well as other closer to home challenges. Challenges like
mountain treks, cycling, white water rafting to name a few (ring Joanna
Jones at 0161 872 1234 for more details).
Training
should be as normal as brushing your teeth (you just do it without
thinking). Your children learn by example, and just maybe they or their
children will exercise without thinking twice (evolution). |
